A-Z of herbs

The following list of herbs covers the common species which can be found wild or cultivated, and also some of the more exotic herbs usually only found in shops.
A brief description is given, and the major uses past and present. Medicinal claims for herbs tend to be extravagant and particularly lengthy, in fact with some herbs one might suppose that a cure for all ills had been found. An attempt has therefore been made to indicate the major medicinal claims of the past and some modern uses where these are medically acceptable. Where a herb is in any way dangerous the fact is noted. This list can only be a short selection from the enormous number of plants with herbal qualities. Further reading will reveal many other plants with intriguing claims.
