The Triquetra symbol

We have been asked a lot about the triquetra symbol as seen on television series Charmed?

It is the Triquetra try-KET-ra, Latin for three cornered.

This three pronged triquetra is a figure formed from three circular arcs of equal radius, producing three overlapping ovals and is usually enclosed or intersected by a circle It may symbolize the Celtic beliefs that everything has three distinct yet interlocked levels - physical, mental and spiritual. When the Celts embraced Christianity they used this symbol to represent the Trinity (father, son and Holy Spirit). As with many Celtic themes the unbroken circle represents eternity. The three symbol is not limited to only Celts, cultures in regions throughout the world consider the number three to be a divine number. The Triquetra and its many variations, represent three elements as a unity or three pieces of a whole.

Fans of the TV show Charmed will know it as the Triquetra symbol representing the "power of three." The "power of three" is the combined magical power of the Halliwell sisters, three "good" witches who live together in San Francisco. The Triquetra is on the cover on the "Book of Shadows," a powerful spell book. The Triquetra also appears in the Christian Religion.

Pagan/Wiccan/Goddess Symbolism:
The Triquetra represents the threefold nature of the Goddess as virgin, mother and crone.
It symbolizes life, death, and rebirth and the three forces of nature: earth, air, and water. The inner three circles represent the female element and fertility.

Christian Symbolism:
The Triquetra represents the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The unbroken circle represents eternity. The interwoven nature of the symbol denotes the indivisibility and equality of the Holy Trinity. It symbolizes that the Holy Spirit is three beings of power, honour, and glory but is indivisibly one God.

There are numerous cultures through history that consider the number three to be holy or divine. The symbol of three interlocking circles has been found on 5000 year old Indian religious sites. In Europe the symbol itself dates as early as the eighth century on carved stones. A Norse rune known as the Odin Knot or Val Knot resembles it almost exactly.
Early Christianity took many pagan symbols, rituals, and holidays and incorporated then into there belief system. We would consider that the symbol originated first in pagan religious belief.
