About Incense |

|
The use of incense
began very early in human history probably around the time of the
discovery of fire. Our ancestors found that everything, when burnt,
gives off a special aroma. The difference, for example, between the
smell of a handful of herbs and the smell of a pine tree branch is
greatly emphasized when each is consigned to the flames. Throw on
some dried leaves, or exotic spice and the air will immediately filled
with a distinctive aroma. |

You can see why
our ancestors believed they were freeing a spirit when they ignited
certain herbs. The effect of a sudden flare of aromatic smoke stimulates
the senses in many different ways. The nose perceives the scent,
and
the eyes follow the delicate smoke as it moves in the air, creating
endlessly different shapes. |

Every
ancient culture practiced incense burning, producing rich and unique
knowledge. They were quick to incorporate the effect of this in their
festivals and rituals. From Egypt to China and from India to South
America
there began a tradition that is still followed today in mosques, churches
and temples. At around the same time, there also began a longstanding
association with Ceremonial Magick. Its sacred purpose was to convey
messages to the heavens, to carry prayers to their destination.
And
to this day, it supports prayer and meditation in all major religions.
Our ancestors also used incense to disinfect living spaces, sick
beds, and
animal stalls, believing it healed the sick. They used it to make
clothing and other objects smell good, to influence dreaming, to
create
visions, to improve the acoustics in churches, and for many other purposes. |

Plants,
herbs and spices (especially from distant lands) soon became much-prized
and highly desirable commodities. For many years they were a currency
more valuable than gold or silver. In almost every religion, aromatic
oils, leaves and powders were considered a gift from God, symbolic of
divine grace. The New Testament tells of three wise men bringing Frankincense
and Myrrh as gifts for the baby Jesus. |
